University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic Host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to Combat Medication Misuse
University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic are collaborating to host the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at multiple locations across Northeast Ohio, including Avon, Elyria, and Westlake. This initiative, supported by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, aims to provide secure drop-off points for expired, unused, or unwanted prescription medications. The event is designed to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse, and overdose. Michael Carlin, vice president of Hospital Pharmacy Operations at University Hospitals, emphasized the importance of safely disposing of unused medications to prevent addiction and save lives. Lindsey Amerine, chief pharmacy officer at Cleveland Clinic, highlighted the partnership's role in making medication disposal accessible to the community. Since its inception in 2010, the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has collected over 20.3 million pounds of prescription drugs.
