Congressman Introduces Bill to Autofill Tax Forms, Aiming to Simplify Tax Filing Process
Rep. Bill Foster, a Democrat from Illinois, has introduced the Autofill Act, a legislative proposal designed to streamline the tax filing process for Americans. The bill proposes a voluntary program that would allow taxpayers to access a secure IRS website to download tax forms prepopulated with information already collected by the IRS from employers, the Social Security Administration, and financial institutions. This initiative aims to replace the Direct File program, which was discontinued by the Trump administration. Unlike the existing Free File program, which is limited to certain income levels and relies on commercial tax preparation companies, the Autofill Act would be available to taxpayers of all income levels and would not depend on external companies. The proposal follows a Government Accountability Office report that highlighted the success of the Direct File pilot program in 12 states, despite challenges in IRS staffing and coordination.
