Kentucky Lawsuit Against Character.AI Highlights Risks of AI Chatbots for Minors
Kentucky has filed a lawsuit against Character Technologies Inc., the company behind Character.AI, marking the first state action against an AI chatbot. The lawsuit alleges that Character.AI's design, which simulates human-like interactions, exposes minors to potential harm by blurring the line between real and simulated relationships. The complaint highlights issues such as ineffective age-gating and content filters, which allegedly allow minors to engage in hypersexualized interactions and exacerbate mental health issues. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction, civil penalties, and disgorgement of profits, citing violations of state consumer-protection and privacy laws.
