Lake Tahoe Homeowners Use Karelian Bear Dogs to Address Bear Encounters
In response to increasing bear encounters, Lake Tahoe homeowners, along with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), have employed Karelian Bear Dogs to manage the situation. These dogs, named Badger and Banjo, are trained to chase bears away from residential areas, helping to mitigate the risk of property damage and human-bear conflicts. The program, initiated by NDOW, aims to teach bears to associate humans with negative experiences, thereby reducing the likelihood of future encounters. This approach is part of a broader strategy to manage the growing black bear population in Nevada, which has rebounded significantly due to conservation efforts.
