Albert Einstein College of Medicine Identifies Key Brain Remodeling Process Affecting Memory in Adolescence
Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine have discovered a biological process in mice that provides new insights into how memory circuits mature during adolescence. The study, published in PLOS Biology, reveals that the retrosplenial cortex (RSP), a critical memory region in the brain, undergoes significant remodeling during late adolescence. This process involves the temporary weakening and subsequent rebuilding of perineuronal nets, which are structures that stabilize memory circuits. The changes in the RSP were not observed in the hippocampus, another memory-related brain region. The study suggests that these changes may influence how memories formed earlier in life are accessed and recalled, with implications for understanding brain development and memory retrieval during adolescence.
