Constellation Energy's Land Purchase in Essex Sparks Concerns Over Potential Data Center Development
Constellation Energy has acquired approximately 700 acres of land in Essex, Illinois, raising concerns among local residents about the potential development of a data center. The land, previously part of the High Point Golf Course, is being marketed to future developers. Despite the absence of a confirmed customer, Constellation's statement suggests that any future project could bring jobs and tax revenue to the community. The Braidwood Clean Energy Center, a nuclear power plant operated by Constellation, is located nearby. Local officials, including Mayor Peter Dvorak, emphasize the importance of balancing community needs with corporate interests. The land acquisitions, totaling over $41 million, began after a fire destroyed the golf course's clubhouse in 2025.
