Florida Father Receives Heart Transplant After Record Seven-Year Wait
Chevon Byfield, a 39-year-old father from Florida, has successfully received a heart transplant after waiting for seven years, setting a record for the longest wait at Memorial Regional Hospital in Miami. Diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2016, Byfield was initially given only three months to live. His height and blood type made it challenging to find a suitable donor heart, prolonging his wait. During this period, he relied on a heart pump known as an LVAD to manage his condition, although it did not improve his health. Byfield spent significant time in the hospital due to infections and other complications, becoming a familiar face among the staff. Despite the challenges, he remained active in volunteering and mentoring others with similar health issues. In February 2026, Byfield was finally matched with a donor heart, and the transplant was successful.
