Hattiesburg Firefighters Utilize Specialized Pet Oxygen Masks to Rescue Dog from House Fire
Hattiesburg firefighters successfully rescued a dog from a house fire on Ashford Circle in September. Upon arrival, firefighters observed the house fully engulfed in flames. During a 360-degree walk-around, they heard an 'eerie screech' near a window, which they identified as a dog. Firefighters entered the burning structure, located the unresponsive animal, and brought it to the front yard. There, they administered oxygen using a specialized mask designed to fit over an animal's muzzle. Within minutes, the dog showed signs of recovery, including fluttering eyes, tongue movement, and tail wagging, and was fully responsive within approximately 10 minutes. The Hattiesburg Fire Department (HFD) received these specialized pet oxygen masks through a donation from the Animal Medical Center of Hattiesburg, enabling every emergency vehicle in the city to be equipped with both human and pet-capable oxygen masks.
