Secret Tunnel Used by Jalisco New Generation Cartel for Smuggling $45 Million in Cocaine Discovered in California
A sophisticated tunnel used for smuggling drugs, including $45 million worth of cocaine, was discovered beneath a 'Buy 4 Less' store in Otay Mesa, California. The tunnel, which extends nearly 2,000 feet from Tijuana, Mexico, was equipped with reinforced walls, a rail system, ventilation, and electricity. It was allegedly operated by the Jalisco New Generation cartel. Homeland Security investigators began monitoring the store in December after observing suspicious activities, such as employees frequently carrying suitcases in and out of the building. The investigation led to the arrest of four individuals charged with conspiracy to use the tunnel and distribute controlled substances. The discovery highlights ongoing efforts to combat cross-border drug trafficking.
