Autonomous Systems Face Growing GPS Interference and Spoofing Threats in Modern Warfare
GPS interference and spoofing have become standard elements of modern warfare, posing significant challenges to autonomous systems such as drones, missiles, and ships. GPS jamming, which involves overwhelming satellite signals with high-powered radio interference, effectively blinds these systems. GPS spoofing, an even more advanced issue, can misdirect these assets, making them appear to be in locations where they are not. This technology has the potential to escalate conflicts, such as the one in Ukraine, by causing misdirected drones to cross international borders. The increasing prevalence of electronic warfare (EW) means that future conflicts are likely to feature GPS spoofing and jamming as routine operational components. Beyond deliberate attacks, there is also the basic risk of signal loss, which further complicates operations for autonomous systems.
