California Bill SB 947 Mandates Human Review for AI-Driven Employment Decisions
California's Senate Bill 947 (SB 947) has been sent to Governor Newsom for signature, aiming to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automated decision systems (ADS) in employment. If signed into law, effective July 1, 2027, the bill will prohibit employers from relying solely on ADS for disciplinary or termination decisions. Instead, it will mandate that a human corroborate any ADS-generated recommendation by reviewing the data used by the system, along with other relevant supporting information such as supervisor evaluations, personnel files, and employee work product.
