Study Suggests Increased Exercise Significantly Reduces Cardiovascular Risk
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that engaging in physical activity beyond current exercise guidelines can significantly lower the risk of cardiovascular events. The research, conducted by a team from Macao Polytechnic University, analyzed data from the UK Biobank involving 17,088 participants over approximately eight years. The findings reveal that individuals who adhered to the existing guideline of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per week experienced an 8 to 9 percent reduction in the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or strokes. However, those who exercised three to four times more than the recommended amount saw a risk reduction exceeding 30 percent. This suggests that while the current guidelines provide a baseline for cardiovascular protection, increased physical activity could offer even greater health benefits.
