Global Coalition Highlights 'Anti-State' Charges Against Journalists Worldwide
Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, the One Free Press Coalition, comprising over 40 global media outlets, has released its '10 Most Urgent' list for 2026, focusing on journalists facing 'anti-state' charges. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 61% of journalists imprisoned worldwide as of December 2025 were held on such charges, which often include accusations of terrorism or receiving foreign funds. The list, compiled with CPJ, International Women’s Media Foundation, and Reporters Without Borders, aims to spotlight cases like that of Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh, who was sentenced to 10 years in Iran for alleged collaboration with the U.S. The coalition's efforts underscore the global issue of press freedom under threat, with 330 journalists currently imprisoned globally.
