San Diego Woman's Encounter with Rattlesnake Highlights Dangers of Snake Season
Diane Distefano, a resident of San Diego, experienced a frightening encounter with a young rattlesnake while gardening in her backyard. During a routine gardening session, she was bitten by the snake, which resulted in two bluish-red puncture wounds on her hand. Distefano quickly sought medical attention at Kaiser Clairemont Mesa Hospital, where doctors identified the bite as a 'dry bite,' meaning the snake struck without injecting venom. This type of bite occurs in approximately 25% of rattlesnake encounters. Despite the lack of venom, Distefano's hand suffered trauma, and she is currently recovering from the incident. The event underscores the increased risk of rattlesnake encounters in San Diego, particularly due to the region's warm winter conditions.
