China Reportedly Obstructs Raw Material Exports to Taiwan, Escalating Economic Pressure
China is reportedly hindering the export of critical industrial raw materials to Taiwan, including germanium and quartz-based materials essential for electronics, aerospace, optics, and semiconductor industries. According to Nikkei Asia, Chinese customs officials are delaying these shipments by requiring exporting companies to answer extensive questions about their deliveries, extending lead times by months and causing Taiwanese manufacturers to lose orders. This move is seen as part of Beijing's broader strategy to exert economic and diplomatic pressure on Taiwan, which China considers its own territory. The obstruction of these exports follows previous instances where China restricted critical metal exports in response to actions by other nations, such as the Netherlands banning advanced chip-exposure systems to China and the U.S. imposing sanctions on China's semiconductor industry.
