NASA's SPHEREx Mission Maps Interstellar Ice in Milky Way
NASA's SPHEREx mission has successfully mapped interstellar ice across vast regions of the Milky Way galaxy, covering areas more than 600 light-years wide. The ice, found within giant molecular clouds, includes vital molecules such as water, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. These findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, highlight the role of these ice reservoirs in the formation and storage of water, which is essential for life. SPHEREx's spectral capabilities allow for detailed measurement of these molecules, providing insights into their composition and environment.
