White House Proposes New Model for Federal Research to Enhance Innovation and Collaboration
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has proposed a significant restructuring of the federal research model, aiming to enhance innovation and collaboration across various sectors. The proposal suggests reorganizing the $200 billion annual federal R&D portfolio around national missions, individual researchers, and AI-enabled science. It emphasizes broadening participation through joint university-industry-Federal research centers, startups, and consortia. The Administration also announced over $5 billion in commitments to expand the Genesis Mission, an AI-for-science initiative involving multiple agencies. This initiative aims to leverage federal datasets, computing capacity, and research assets to drive scientific discovery and innovation.
