State Department Acknowledges Error in Mislabeling African Countries on Map
The U.S. State Department admitted to an error involving a map of Africa presented at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro. The map incorrectly labeled six African countries: Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Cote d'Ivoire, Malawi, and Cameroon. None of these countries were correctly identified on the map, with Nigeria shown as landlocked and Mozambique misplaced in the Horn of Africa. The error was attributed to a last-minute alteration by a team member. The map also contained an artificial intelligence watermark, indicating it was created using OpenAI tools.
