UN Watchdog Reports Chernobyl Shield Compromised After Drone Strike, Raising Safety Concerns
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that the protective shield at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, known as the New Safe Confinement (NSC), has been severely damaged following a drone strike. This incident has compromised the shield's ability to contain radioactive material from the 1986 disaster. The strike, which occurred in February, has been attributed to Russian forces by Ukraine, although Russia denies these claims. The NSC, a $2.3 billion structure completed in 2019, was designed to last 100 years and protect against environmental elements. Despite the damage, the IAEA's inspection revealed that the shield's load-bearing structures and monitoring systems remain intact. However, the loss of its primary safety functions poses potential risks to the surrounding environment.
