NMSP Identifies Remains of Missing Taos Woman, Melissa Casias, Found in Carson National Forest
The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) have identified human remains found in the Carson National Forest as those of Melissa Casias, a woman from Taos who was reported missing nearly a year ago. On May 28, a hiker discovered the remains in the McGaffey Ridge area, alongside a handgun. Melissa Casias was reported missing on June 26, 2025, after she failed to return home from visiting her daughter at work. Her disappearance prompted a missing person investigation when her personal belongings, including her purse, identification, and cellphones, were found left behind. The NMSP, in coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), confirmed the identity of the remains. The investigation into her disappearance and the circumstances surrounding her death remains active and ongoing.
