University of Minnesota Duluth to Host Community Conversation on Postpartum Mental Health
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is organizing a two-night community conversation focused on postpartum mental health. This initiative comes in the wake of recent tragic events, such as the Lindsay Clancy case, which have brought increased attention to conditions like postpartum psychosis and postpartum bipolar disorder. While postpartum depression is more commonly recognized, the event aims to shed light on the broader spectrum of mental health conditions that can affect individuals during pregnancy and up to a year after childbirth. Mental illness is identified as the most common complication of pregnancy, impacting up to one in five new mothers. These conditions, which include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and psychosis, can arise from various factors such as stress, hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, medication adjustments, or traumatic birth experiences.
