Maryland Youth Academy Incident Leads to Hospitalization of 19 Due to Suspected Food-Related Illness
Nineteen individuals at the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy in Laurel, Maryland, were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms following lunch. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department, along with assistance from other fire departments, responded to the incident, which was declared a mass casualty event. The investigation did not detect carbon monoxide, and officials suspect that the illnesses may be related to food, although a definitive cause has not been confirmed. The academy is a military-style program run by the District of Columbia National Guard and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education for the District of Columbia.
