Rep. Chu Introduces Resolution to Honor Edwin Hubble's 1923 Mount Wilson Discovery
Representative Judy Chu has introduced a House resolution to commemorate Edwin Hubble's groundbreaking 1923 observation at Mount Wilson Observatory above Pasadena. This observation provided the first definitive proof of a galaxy beyond the Milky Way, fundamentally altering humanity's understanding of the universe. The resolution proposes designating October 5, 2026, as 'National Beyond the Milky Way Day.' It aims to recognize the anniversary of this pivotal discovery and honor the scientific contributions of astronomer Edwin Hubble and Henrietta Swan Leavitt, whose work on Cepheid variable stars was crucial for measuring cosmic distances. The resolution encourages schools, science organizations, museums, observatories, and communities across the United States to mark this milestone through STEM education and public programs. Co-sponsors of the resolution include California Representatives Zoe Lofgren, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and Ted Lieu, with endorsement from Carnegie Science.
