New York City Opens Shelter Amid Historic Cold Snap
New York City has opened a new shelter in Lower Manhattan to provide temporary housing for over 100 unhoused individuals during an ongoing extreme cold spell. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the opening of the shelter at 320 Pearl Street, which offers 106 beds and on-site services without curfews, aiming to encourage more homeless individuals to seek refuge from the cold. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the city's historic cold snap, which has resulted in multiple fatalities due to hypothermia. The shelter, operated by Breaking Ground, was initially proposed in early 2024 but faced delays due to legal challenges. The city has also expanded outreach and shelter services, including opening additional warming centers and deploying mobile warming units.
