Illinois Leads U.S. Tornado Reports in 2026 with 220 Incidents
Illinois has emerged as the most tornado-affected state in the U.S. for 2026, with 220 combined reports and confirmed tornadoes as of July 27, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. This figure is more than double that of any other state and over four times Oklahoma's tally. The Midwest has seen an unusual concentration of tornado activity, with Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa also ranking in the top five. Wisconsin, typically less tornado-prone, recorded 51 tornadoes, including four EF3 events, marking its most active year since 1984. The persistent warm and humid conditions in the Midwest, coupled with a sharp southward jet stream, have been identified as key contributors to this severe weather pattern. Meanwhile, traditionally active Southern states like Alabama and Texas have experienced below-average tornado activity this year.
