Oregon State Board of Education Faces Tension Amid Role and Authority Concerns
The Oregon State Board of Education is experiencing internal tension as two members, Becky Tymchuk and Shimiko Montgomery, have resigned, citing concerns over the board's limited influence. Tymchuk, who served in a non-voting capacity, expressed frustration that the board often acts as a 'rubber stamp' for decisions already made by the legislature and the Oregon Department of Education. Montgomery's reappointment was denied by Governor Tina Kotek after she criticized an executive order banning school districts from reducing instructional time. The board's role is often seen as limited, as it typically reviews rules after they have been drafted by other bodies. This has led to calls for the board to take a more proactive role in shaping educational policy and setting statewide priorities.
