Astronomical Study Reveals Erythrulose in Milky Way, Suggesting Origins of Life
A recent astronomical study has detected the presence of erythrulose, a type of sugar, near the center of the Milky Way within a molecular cloud between star systems. This discovery, reported by Space.com, suggests that other sugars, such as ribose—a key component of RNA—and other molecules essential to the origin of life may also exist in space. The study, co-authored by Carlos Briones and published in the journal Nature Astronomy, highlights that erythrulose, which is also found in raspberries, could transform into the building blocks of nucleic acids like DNA and RNA. The presence of such sugars in massive molecular clouds of dust and gas could lead to their incorporation into asteroids, comets, or other small celestial bodies. These bodies may eventually collide with planets, potentially aiding in the emergence of life.
