San Miguel Fire Department Secures $1 Million Federal Funding for New Emergency Operations Center
The San Miguel Fire Department in northern San Luis Obispo County is set to receive approximately $1.03 million in federal funding for the construction of a new emergency operations center. U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) announced the award, which comes through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Emergency Operations Center Grant Program. This center will be a crucial component of a larger expansion project for the fire department's facilities, which was estimated in 2024 to cost $8.75 million. The new center aims to enhance coordination among various agencies, including the fire department, Cal Fire, the California Highway Patrol, and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, during complex, multi-jurisdictional emergencies such as fires, floods, severe storms, and earthquakes. Currently, San Miguel lacks a dedicated space for large-scale emergency response coordination.
