Anthropic's AI Model Discovers Weaknesses in AES Encryption, Raising Security Concerns
Anthropic's AI model, Claude Mythos, has identified new mathematical vulnerabilities in AES encryption, a critical component of internet security. The model, not yet publicly available, demonstrated an improved method to attack a simplified version of AES, which is used in online banking, encrypted communications, and data storage. The findings, published alongside two research papers, reveal that Mythos can attack a 7-round variant of AES-128, which typically runs 10 rounds, at a speed 200 to 800 times faster than previous methods. Additionally, the model halved the effective key strength of HAWK, a post-quantum signature scheme, in 60 hours. These results were shared with U.S. government and industry partners before publication.
