AI Fabrication of Citations in Biomedical Studies Raises Concerns
Artificial intelligence is reportedly fabricating references to non-existent medical research, according to a recent audit of biomedical papers. The audit found over 4,000 citations to bogus studies, which can undermine clinical guidelines that healthcare professionals rely on. Maxim Topaz, an associate professor at the Columbia School of Nursing, highlights the growing issue, noting that the number of erroneous citations has increased 12-fold over the past three years. These fabricated citations can influence patient care, as doctors may base treatment decisions on studies that never existed. The problem is exacerbated by AI tools that inadvertently insert fake citations, which can slip through peer reviews.
