AFRAA Warns Blocked Funds Threaten African Airline Viability and Connectivity
The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) has raised concerns over the financial viability of African airlines due to the inability to repatriate ticket and cargo revenues. This issue, described as a strategic constraint, affects Africa's connectivity, trade, tourism, and economic integration. As of October 2025, seven African countries, including Algeria and Mozambique, account for a significant portion of the global total of blocked airline funds. These funds are trapped due to foreign exchange controls and currency shortages, which violate bilateral air services agreements. AFRAA emphasizes the need for coordinated action to address these challenges, urging governments to honor repatriation commitments and prioritize airlines in foreign exchange allocation.
