Indonesia's Sovereign Wealth Fund Invests $12.4 Billion in Nickel Industry to Retain Value
Indonesia is advancing its domestic nickel industry through its sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, which has announced plans to invest $12.4 billion in 26 downstream projects. These projects span mining, metals, energy, and agriculture, aiming to keep more value within the country rather than exporting raw or semi-processed resources. The state mining company MIND ID and domestic private firms are taking larger roles, moving away from reliance on foreign capital. This development comes amid concerns from Chinese investors about regulatory uncertainties in Indonesia, which have led to reduced output and halted expansion plans by major Chinese smelters. Despite these challenges, Indonesia is focusing on building its midstream capabilities, which include precursor materials and battery components, to intercept its own ore before it leaves the country.
