Wegovy Demonstrates 20% Reduction in Cardiovascular Events, Zepbound Shows Greater Weight Loss in Direct Comparison
A recent analysis comparing GLP-1 receptor agonists Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) highlights distinct advantages for each medication. Wegovy has demonstrated a 20% relative reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death, in adults with established heart disease and overweight or obesity, based on the SELECT trial. This makes Wegovy the only one of the two with randomized proof of such cardiovascular benefits. In contrast, Zepbound has shown superior average weight loss. The SURMOUNT-5 trial, a direct head-to-head comparison, found that participants on tirzepatide (Zepbound) lost an average of 20.2% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks, compared to 13.7% for those on semaglutide (Wegovy).
