Northern Lights Expected Across Several U.S. States This Weekend
Skywatchers in the northern United States are in for a spectacular display as the northern lights, or aurora borealis, are predicted to be visible this weekend. This phenomenon is due to a large coronal hole that has opened in the sun's atmosphere, allowing high-speed solar winds to escape. These winds are expected to reach Earth on April 17 and 18, potentially causing a geomagnetic storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts that the auroras may be visible as far south as Idaho and New York. The geomagnetic storm, classified as moderate (G2), is anticipated to cause minor to moderate radio blackouts and strong auroras. The new moon on Friday will provide darker skies, enhancing visibility for this natural light show.
