Costa Rica Receives First Group of Migrants Deported from the US Under New Agreement
The first group of migrants deported from the United States to third countries has arrived in Costa Rica. This group consists of 25 individuals from various countries including Albania, Cameroon, China, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, and Morocco. The arrival follows an agreement signed between the US and Costa Rica in March, which allows Costa Rica to receive up to 25 deportees per week. The US provides financial support to Costa Rica in return. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is involved in providing initial care, food, and accommodation for the migrants during their first week in Costa Rica. The agreement has faced criticism due to the high cost of deportation, estimated at over $1 million per deportee, according to a report by Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Costa Rica retains the right to reject deportees on a case-by-case basis and has committed not to send individuals back to countries where they may face persecution.
