House Democrats Criticize OPM for Omitting Employee Departures in Retirement Backlog Investigation
House Democrats have raised concerns about the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) handling of the federal retirement backlog, which has grown significantly during President Trump's second term. The backlog currently stands at 55,681 pending cases, down from a peak of 65,237 cases. Lawmakers, led by Rep. James Walkinshaw, D-Va., have accused OPM of not being fully transparent in their responses to oversight requests. Specifically, OPM's report failed to mention the departure of over 100 staff members from its Retirement Services division, which was attributed to Trump-implemented staffing initiatives. These initiatives included the deferred resignation program and reductions in force, which have compounded existing delays in retirement processing.
