Maldives Scuba Diving Tragedy: Sole Survivor Escapes Death as Five Others Perish
A tragic scuba diving accident in the Maldives resulted in the deaths of five Italian tourists, with one individual narrowly escaping the same fate. The incident occurred when a group of divers descended 160 feet into a cave in Vaavu Atoll. A sixth diver, a student from the University of Genoa, chose to remain on the yacht, the Duke of York, instead of joining the dive, which ultimately saved her life. The reasons for her decision to stay behind are unclear. The deceased include Monica Montefalcone, a marine biology professor, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, and three other divers: Muriel Oddenino, Gianluca Benedetti, and Federico Gualtieri. Experts suggest that oxygen toxicity and panic may have contributed to the fatalities. Local police have launched an investigation, and search efforts were suspended due to adverse weather conditions.
