Grover Norquist Advocates for Education Savings Accounts in South Carolina
Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, is advocating for the use of Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) in South Carolina as a means to enhance school choice and reduce state income taxes. Under the leadership of Governor Henry McMaster and other state officials, South Carolina has implemented the South Carolina Education Scholarship Trust Fund (ESTF) Program, which provides eligible children with annual ESAs valued at over $7,600. These accounts can be used for various educational expenses, including tuition and school supplies. The program aims to expand school choice while simultaneously phasing out state income taxes. Critics of alternative tax credit scholarship proposals argue that ESAs offer more immediate financial support to families, particularly those with lower incomes, as they do not require upfront tuition payments. The initiative is part of a broader conservative policy agenda to align school choice with tax reduction efforts.
