Snowfall Blankets Southern Argentina's Patagonian Desert
In early April 2026, a significant snowstorm covered large areas of southern Argentina's high plains, particularly in the Patagonian Desert. This event was captured by NASA's Terra satellite using the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on April 3, 2026. The snowstorm was unusual for the region, which typically experiences dry conditions, with precipitation mostly occurring on the western side of the Andes. However, strong winds carried snow eastward, resulting in a temporary blanket of snow across the desert landscape. The snow was most prominent in higher elevations, while valleys near glacial lakes remained snow-free. The snow melted quickly, with satellite images from April 4 showing snow only in the highest mountain areas.
