UK Parliament Passes Bill to Ban Cigarette Purchases for Future Generations
The UK Parliament has passed a significant piece of legislation aimed at phasing out cigarette purchases for future generations. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, which awaits formal approval by King Charles III, will prohibit individuals born after December 31, 2008, from ever buying cigarettes. This move is part of a broader strategy to combat smoking-related health issues. The legislation also grants the government authority to regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products, including their flavors and packaging. Currently, it is illegal to sell these products to individuals under 18, but the new law will incrementally raise the minimum age for purchasing cigarettes each year, effectively creating a smoke-free generation. The UK joins New Zealand in implementing such stringent anti-smoking measures, although New Zealand's similar law was repealed by a subsequent government.
