USDA Approves Disaster Relief for New York Fruit Growers After April Frost
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved federal disaster relief for New York fruit and specialty crop growers following significant losses caused by a severe frost in April 2026. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with Representative Pat Ryan (D-NY18), announced the decision, highlighting the devastating impact on the state's agricultural sector. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets estimates over $30 million in losses, with some growers experiencing crop losses ranging from 15% to 100%. Affected crops include apples, grapes, stone fruits, onions, and other specialty crops. Ulster, Dutchess, and Orange Counties, major producers of apples and other fruits, were particularly hard-hit, with some farms losing up to 90% of their yield. The relief aims to mitigate financial hardships for farmers, their families, and workers.
