Parliamentary Committee Summons Social Media Platforms to Address Online Safety and Privacy Concerns
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology in India has scheduled a meeting with major social media platforms, including Meta, X, Snapchat, and Google, to discuss issues related to online safety, user privacy, and compliance with government regulations. The meeting, set for 4 PM, aims to address the digital safety of women and children, as well as the protection of data belonging to farmers, rural residents, laborers, and the general public. The committee, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has summoned these platforms to explain their measures for safeguarding user privacy and ensuring compliance with public order laws. This meeting follows an incident where Meta briefly removed a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to a technical error, which was later restored. The video was part of Modi's address during a student agitation over examination paper leaks, leading to the introduction of stricter legal frameworks against such leaks.
