Millennial Generation Faces Diverging Economic Realities Amid Housing Market Challenges
The millennial generation is experiencing a significant economic divide, with older millennials enjoying boomer-style comfort while younger millennials face housing challenges reminiscent of the early 1900s. According to Jessica Lautz, deputy chief economist at the National Association of Realtors, older millennials are now living a boomer-style existence, owning homes and leveraging equity, while younger millennials struggle with affordability. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis shows that the real under-35 homeownership rate is closer to 22% rather than the widely cited 37%. This divide is attributed to factors such as student loans, high rent, and credit card debt, which have delayed home purchases for younger millennials.
