Global Heatwaves Intensify with Rising Temperatures, IPCC Warns
Heatwaves, defined as prolonged periods of abnormally high temperatures, are becoming more frequent, intense, and widespread globally. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), these events are now occurring in regions previously unaffected and at unexpected times of the year. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are critical in defining heatwaves, as unusually warm nights can exacerbate the impact by reducing the body's ability to recover. The IPCC attributes this trend to global warming, which is expected to further amplify the frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves. These extreme heat events often interact with other environmental risks, such as droughts, wildfires, flash floods, and air pollution, creating compounding challenges for ecosystems and human populations.
