Thailand Government Proposes Foreign Visitor Fee and Domestic Tourism Subsidy to Boost Economy
The Thai government is planning to introduce a domestic tourism subsidy program called 'Thai Travel Thai Plus' in September, alongside a proposed fee for foreign visitors. The initiative, led by Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul, aims to stimulate the local tourism industry by offering a co-payment scheme with a preliminary budget of 1.75 billion baht. This program will provide 500,000 entitlements through Krungthai Bank’s Pao Tang application, allowing for broader spending on tourism services. Additionally, the proposed foreign visitor fee is intended to fund tourism-site development, visitor safety, and environmental restoration. The government hopes to extend the benefits of sustainable tourism to local communities and smaller operators.
