Senators Reintroduce Legislation to Protect Coal Miners' Benefits
A group of U.S. senators, including Joe Manchin, Shelley Moore Capito, Mark Warner, and others, have reintroduced the Miners Protection Act. This legislation aims to ensure that retired coal miners and their families receive lifetime pension and healthcare benefits. The bill addresses the financial uncertainty faced by miners due to company bankruptcies and the underfunding of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) 1974 pension plan. The plan, which was well-managed before the 2008 financial crisis, is now on the brink of insolvency. The proposed legislation seeks to transfer excess funds from the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) fund to the UMWA pension plan to prevent insolvency.
