Ohio Introduces Attendance Tracking Tool to Combat School Absenteeism
Ohio has launched a new online tool, attendance.ohio.gov, aimed at helping parents and taxpayers track student attendance in public schools. This initiative, announced by Governor Mike DeWine, seeks to address chronic absenteeism, which affects approximately one in four students across the state. The dashboard provides weekly updates on attendance data, a significant improvement over the previous system where data was only available annually. While participation is not mandatory, the state hopes that schools will voluntarily submit their data to better understand and address absenteeism issues. Currently, some of the districts with the highest absenteeism rates, such as Lorain and Cleveland, have not yet participated, but others like Akron and Youngstown have joined the initiative.
