Critically Endangered Bactrian Camel Dies at Denver Zoo Due to Stomach Ulcer
Hagrid, a critically endangered Bactrian camel at the Denver Zoo, has died after a stomach ulcer perforated his stomach wall. The zoo's veterinary team had been monitoring Hagrid for gastrointestinal discomfort and provided supportive care, but he passed away despite their efforts. A necropsy confirmed the ulcer as the cause of death, and it was noted that his third stomach chamber might have been displaced, affecting digestion. Bactrian camels are among the rarest large mammals, native to the Gobi deserts of China and Mongolia. Hagrid, who arrived at the zoo in 2020, was a beloved figure among staff and visitors.
