Doylestown Farmer Reports Significant Losses After Carjacking of Produce Van in Northeast Philadelphia
Hayday Farms, a small Doylestown farm, is facing substantial losses after its market van was carjacked in Northeast Philadelphia. The incident occurred when an employee, en route to a farmers' market, was stopped at a red light near Roosevelt Boulevard and Southampton Road. A barefoot man in scrubs reportedly jumped onto the back of the van, banged on the door, and then assaulted the driver, giving him a black eye, before driving off with the vehicle. The van, which is crucial to the farm's operations and typically filled with fresh produce for markets, was later recovered by Bensalem police at the Inn of the Dove. However, it was found ransacked, with rotten produce scattered inside and requiring major repairs. Hayday Farms owner Hank Whittenberg estimated the total loss, including produce, honey, scales, and other specialty goods, to be around $7,000. Among the lost items were approximately 50 cantaloupes, watermelons, corn, and specialty peppers.
