Astronomers Discover Ancient Dwarf Galaxy 'Loki' Within the Milky Way
Astronomers have identified an ancient dwarf galaxy, named 'Loki', buried within the Milky Way. This discovery, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, suggests that Loki was consumed by the Milky Way billions of years ago. The research focused on 20 metal-poor stars in the Milky Way's galactic plane, revealing chemical traces of cosmic explosions but no white dwarf explosions, indicating Loki's short-lived nature. The stars' orbits, both prograde and retrograde, suggest an early accretion event when the Milky Way was young.
